This first online workshop in a series of two aimed at instrument scientists and other facility staff provides an overview of FAIR – data that are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. We consider key questions related to the data facilities produce: What is FAIR? What’s the difference between FAIR and Open? What are the benefits of FAIR for the photon and neutron community? How do I start to make data FAIR? Examples from a range of facilities connect the concept of FAIR to practice, highlighting the vital role facilities play in supporting FAIR for photon and neutron research.

Elizabeth Newbold, from Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and a member of FAIRsFAIR, will do a 15min presentation entitled "What is FAIR? & Open versus FAIR – what’s the difference?". The session invites scientists to think about what Open and FAIR mean in practice and the implications of both for data. It also aims to give tothe scientists a chance to experience differentiating between the two in practical real-life scenarios that they might actually encounter.

What are the implications of FAIR for data management before, during, and after the experiment? When, where and how during the lifecycle of an experiment do we collect the metadata we need to document data and make them FAIR? What is active data management planning? How does it benefit both facilities and users and how does it help to make data FAIR?
