A comprehensive guide to FAIR in the European Open Sciences Cloud (EOSC) now features in the Library Carpentry Top 10 FAIR Data & Software Things.

The guide was created by FAIRsFAIR partners in collaboration with ELIXIR during the Library Carpentry-Mozilla Global Sprint in May 2019 and forms part of a growing collection of compact, stand-alone mini-guides designed to help the research community understand how they can make their research data and software FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

EOSC and FAIR in a Nutshell

Incorporating a plethora of links to multimedia content snippets and activities which flesh out the key information of relevance, EOSC Top 10 FAIR Data & Software Things is carefully structured to provide library staff and researchers with a comprehensive overview of FAIR concepts and the mechanics underlying their incorporation into every facet of the EOSC’s creation.

The end result is a creative and engaging resource which is simple to navigate and delivers information efficiently and effectively.

Easy Navigation

EOSC Top 10 FAIR Data & Software Things consists of ten brief, clearly labelled, and very manageable chunks – or “Things” which lay out the key information in each subject area. Users may scan a numbered list and jump to a particular subject, or simply scroll down to read each content chunk in order, drilling down through the links within a single chunk to explore issues of interest in greater detail.

The Guide in Action

For example, Thing 8: EOSC Services presents the EOSC-hub services catalogue in two crisp paragraphs containing links to further descriptions of individual services. Thereafter the reader is offered two activities, one which guides exploration of cross domain repositories for search output, and the other a webinar on how to manage data to make them open and FAIR.

A similar experiential approach is followed for each of the other nine sections:

  • Introducing EOSC
  • Buzzword busting
  • FAIR principles
  • Infrastructures
  • FAIR in EOSC
  • EOSC for research domains
  • EOSC training
  • Scientific integrity and trust

EOSC Top 10 FAIR Data & Software Things was created by Marjan Grootveld, Frans Huigen, Eliane Fankhauser, and Ellen Leenarts of Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS), and Paula Andrea Martinez of ELIXIR-Europe.

The Top 10 FAIR Data & Software Things concept is the brainchild of Library Carpentry, a global community of volunteers with expertise in building software and data skills within libraries and information-centres. Each guide is focused on a specific discipline or topic. Amongst those recently added alongside the EOSC are imaging, astronomy, music, linked open data, and nanotechnology.

The Library Carpentry-Mozilla Global Sprint was organised by Library Carpentry, Australian Research Data Commons and the Research Data Alliance Libraries for Research Data Interest Group in collaboration with FOSTER Open Science, OpenAire, RDA Europe, Data Management Training Clearinghouse, California Digital Library, Dryad, AARNet, Center for Digital Scholarship at the Leiden University, and DANS.
